Invitation from UN and learning about Eastern theology This year has meant more responsibility for Hege-Elise and me in that we were officially appointed as leader of the YWAM in Athens last September. As YWAM received several new longtime workers here in Athens, we needed clearer leadership. A descriptive picture given by YWAMs founder, Loren Cunningham, of the work of YWAM is that it is like an airplane built in the air. Many pieces are put into place while the aircraft is flying up in the air. I thought I would giive you a brief update on what we've been doing during this year already. In January, we got to share many wonderful things that God did during the time that YWAM United visited us. Several people experienced healings and salvation, etc. (read more about it in the last post). In February, Elise went to Geneva to attend the Western Europe Leadership gathering. At the conference she got the oportunity to share what is happening in Athens and also to invite people for the YWAM refugee circle gathering that we will arrange here in Athens in April, focusing on YWAMs refugee work. After she had given her information, a woman came up to Elise to ask her if she could come to the UN to give a 20-minute speech in November about how YWAM meets refugees in Europe (!!). She did not believe her ears as she initially thought she heard UofN (UMU University) instead of UN. After a while, she realized that it actually was the UN that she was invited to. It turned out that the woman worked for the UN in Geneva and was a good friend of YWAM in Switzerland and was visiting the conference that day! Elise was, of course, very surprised and honoured with such an invitation. But she also felt that she first had to talk to the leaders of YWAMs refugee work in Europe before giving a definite answer. We have not yet learned how it will be, but we think Elise will go there together with the leader of YWAMs refugee work. The meeting would be in November. We are excited on how God is leading us. In the end of February we had the privilege to host Johannes Börjesson, doctor of theology from Cambridge and ordained priest in the church of Sweden. He has also done a DTS and LTS in YWAM. His doctoral dissertation addressed the topic: “The Reception of Augustine in Byzantine Theology: 430–c. 900”. This theme led to the fact that he was interested in the differences between the Church of the West (Catholic and Protestant Church) and the East (Orthodox Church). The theme is burning for us here in Greece. Missionaries from the West have since the Ottoman era ended been sent here to christianise the greek people even if they were orthodox. This has led to major conflicts that damaged relations between orthodox and evangelical Christians. As YWAM, we would like to try to understand this complex image, and not just the Western version of it, which claims that the Orthodox persecute other Christians by limiting their rights in Greece. Therefore, teaching and increased understanding of orthodox theology and history is a key factor for success in the long term. I am convinced that reconciliation and relationships between the East and West is the only way forward! Thank you for your support! We are doing our work together with you, as members of the body of Christ. Bless you!
On Monday the 19.2 we celebrate the Clean Monday". It is the start for the 40 day of fasting before the Easter. Then all the kids are flying kites!
