Peace that is not of this world! In recent weeks, we had started to look forward to a pleasant spring where life would be returning to a more normal state. The corona and the restrictions would decrease more and more. Everything looked good in February as I also was privileged to celebrate my 40th birthday. My Afghan friend actually kidnapped me when I was out for a run in the morning and they they took me on various activities, including an involuntary bath. But then the war in Ukraine started and took our focus. It felt so unreal and so meaningless and it was with heavy hearts that we started to receive updates from our colleagues in Ukraine about how the war forced them to flee. Many of them are now in the western part of Ukraine and have begun massive aid work with the refugees who arrive (thousands per day). We have colleagues in both Ukraine and Russia and know that the evil one is trying to divide these two brotherly people, who have lived close to each other for a long time. Ukraine has been like a revival catalyst for many people in Russia, as missionaries from Ukraine have entered into Russia. Feels like the war has both political and spiritual elements. A professor in our organisation was telling us how the war now can be traced back to when the church split happened between the east and west around 500 AD. Putin sees it as his religious duty to strengthen the Eastern orthodox Church against the threats from the west. Therefore. His actions are also blessed by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Hege-Elise quickly became involved in coordinating and organising the relief work that are now being mobilised within YWAM as a result of the huge influx of refugees that is on its way into Ukraine's neighbouring countries. She is good at organising and seems so far to be ok with zoom meetings from early mornings until evenings. Thanks to the experiences we have from the refugee crisis here in Greece (especially during the years 2015 and 2016), she knows a little more what is required and what should be done in this situation. Thankfully, the willingness to help is great and a lot is done to help those in need! At the same time, I hope that the crisis in e.g. Afghanistan is not completely forgotten now. There, people are dying of hunger and the sharia laws is become even tougher. A friend of mine told me that his brother in Afghanistan wants to become a Christian but he does not know if he dares to lead him to faith because he is unsure if he will survive long after that. People are forced to go to the mosque every day to pray and if you convert or have a Bible app on your phone, you can be stoned to death. Apart from the war in Ukraine and the unrest in Afghanistan, work and life here in Athens continue quite normally. Among other things, we have been given the generous opportunity to bring small groups of people to a camp area outside Athens called Porto Astro, which is owned by the Hellenic Ministries (the largest evangelical mission organization here in Greece). They want the place to be used more during the winter months. We went there with 8 Persians (Iranians and Afghans) and had a two day retreat in February. The place is in a pretty remote area and you have to take the boat the last bit. There is an Albanian family living at the camp site who take care of the properties and are the hosts; cooks food and arranges everything when we get there. There are opportunities for football, volleyball, basketball, wall climbing, kayaking, silence, etc. Many of the guys experienced a necessary break in everyday life that is otherwise filled with worries about the future (asylum situation, jobs, housing, money, etc.). In the same way as you have to take the car to the inspection every year you also need to slow down and look at your own life. We need to be aware that we are both spirit, body and soul in order to be able to experience the peace that the Bible speaks of. Shalom (peace) is a very rich word that means more than just peace or tranquility. This means that we first of all can approach the Father in Heaven and experience His peace as we let Him be our Lord. Then we can deal with our relationships with other people, ourselves and the creation around us. Jesus says in John 14:27: ”My peace I give to you, not the peace that the world gives you”. I realise at the time writing this how important it is that we stay close to the Lord and His word in a time filled with anxiety and war around us. The peace that Jesus wants to give us is a peace that we cannot buy with money or status. It is given to us as a gift as we approach Him! Be sure to invest in that kind of peace in your life!
